It
would seem superfluous to say that I love photography. Less
superfluous, and perhaps interesting to some, is the question
why the art of photography should become a person’s passion,
and his chosen lifestyle.
Photography
is my thing because, like music (my other great passion) it
creates an energy. You know, it wakes you up to the world, keeps
you alert to possibilities. I’m always looking for the right
light, pushing the boundaries, trying to achieve the most I can
in what can literally be 1/125th of a second.
That’s
where the decisive moment lives: in the split second that lies
between what has just happened and the question mark of what is
about to happen. Finding it is nothing short of exhilarating.
I
particularly love the work of Henri Cartier Bresson. He’s
always been a hero of mine because of his ability to take the
ordinary and make it extraordinary. In fact, it was a print of
his, given to my mother, that first inspired me to start taking
photographs. It’s this Paris shot: Eiffel Tower in the
background and this couple in the foreground, doing their thing.
I love it. The city sprawled uneasily all over the place, and
the constant the Tower like a volcano in the background.
Just the sprawl, the constant, and this great moment caught in
the middle of it all.
